Boston Area Jacobin Reading Group

First meeting: 8-10pm, December 2, 2013 at Andala Cafe

Come have open, forward-looking discussions about Left politics with fellow Boston-/Cambervillians. No prior knowledge required. The group's name could refer to Jacobin, a "journal of culture and polemic" that has revitalized debates about the future of the Left, but it might just be descriptive: with writing from Jacobin as a starting point, we'll also look farther afield. This first get-together is mostly about meeting people and gauging areas of interest, so feel free to come even if you haven't done all the reading. Here's what we'll be discussing:

Locked Out
Against Tipping
The Red and the Black
The Light on the Hill

We want to create a space for bold thinking about alternative futures. Areas of interest may include: the roles that art, design, technological change, new manufacturing processes, and digital culture might play in rethinking Left futures; possibilities for new political economies and institutional/cultural reconfigurations; and ways of thinking politically and reconstructively about urbanism and environmental justice beyond tedious Left apocalypticism.

Drinks afterward.

In the mean time, feel free to get in touch with questions or comments.

We're a reading and discussion group, not a fan club or a front for a skeezy political party. We have no official affiliations with anything.
